Harshawardhan Bal, PhD
Managing Partner

Harsh is a graduate of the Exec General Management Program of Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on strategy, finance, digital marketing and leadership. He brings ~20 yrs of cross value chain and global experience in the biopharma, healthcare and med tech (viz., digital, analytics, mobile, IOT, AI) space, incl., strategy consulting (Booz & Co.), transactions (Avendus Capital), operations (Piramal Enterprises handling $125 Mn P&L) and start up experience (established, led and grew mobile and analytics practice at InfoCepts to a successful business winning top biopharma and Fortune 500 clientele).

He held lead positions at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, Astellas Pharma and Takeda Oncology where he studied novel druggable protein superfamilies, disease biology of HIV/AIDS and HTLV-induced Adult T-Cell Leukemia and developed an enterprise knowledge management system to preserve and reuse institutional knowledge around proprietary targets and molecules across the oncology, cardiovascular and inflammation therapeutic areas. As a consultant at Booz & Co., Harsh played leadership roles in several major projects, including, the NCIís cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid Program and global regulatory submission harmonization strategy for pharmaceutical clients.

As VP and Head of Life Sciences for MAPE Advisory Group, Mumbai, Harsh was responsible for sector wide intelligence on companies in the US, EU, Asia and emerging markets and for managing the firmís relationships with C-level executives, and VC and PE funds. As Managing Partner, Harsh currently leads the Life Sciences Investment Banking practice at Stem Cell Capital, a mid-market advisory firm he founded in 2008 in Gaithersburg, MD. He is currently based out of Mumbai and focuses on cross-border transactions covering M&A, capital raise (VC/PE syndication), product in-/out-licensing, global business development and strategic sourcing.

Harsh holds an M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Nagpur University and a Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He received graduate training in Molecular Biology at the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi and post-doctoral training at the University of Rochester and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He was the recipient of research fellowships from the University Grants Commission and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India for undergraduate and Doctoral studies.

Harsh has authored several peer-reviewed articles on disease biology and development of targeted therapies in international journals as well as books on biomedical informatics by Tata McGraw-Hill and Springer.
